A run capacitor stays in circuit all the time on single phase fan motors. It creates the phase shift that lets the motor turn properly.
When it weakens, the motor loses torque, pulls more current and runs hot. So it fades rather than fails, which makes it easy to miss.
Isolate the supply and discharge the capacitor through a resistor before touching it. Measure capacitance with a multimeter on the microfarad range and compare against the printed rating. Replace anything more than about six percent below rating, matching microfarads exactly and voltage rating equal or higher.
Symptoms of a failing capacitor
- The motor hums, struggles, then starts once you spin the wheel.
- Running speed is lower than it should be.
- Current draw is higher than the nameplate figure.
- The motor runs hot and cycles on its thermal protector.
- The capacitor case is bulged, leaking or discoloured.
- Finally, the fault is intermittent and worse on hot days.
That last symptom is the classic one. Capacitance falls as the component heats, so a capacitor can test acceptably cold and fail in service.
Safety first, without exception
Capacitors hold charge after you cut the supply, and a big one can give you a nasty shock.
- Switch off at the disconnect and lock it off where required.
- Prove the circuit dead with a tester you have checked on a known source.
- Discharge the capacitor through a suitable resistor, typically 20 kΩ.
- Verify zero volts across the terminals before touching anything.
- Never short the terminals with a screwdriver.
- Finally, note the wiring positions before disconnecting.
If any of that sits outside your training, stop and call a qualified technician. The reading is easy. The isolation is not forgiving.
Testing it
A multimeter with a capacitance range does the job in under a minute.
Take off at least one lead, pick the microfarad range and read across the terminals. Then compare against the printed rating. Most run capacitors allow about five percent either way.
A capacitor reading more than roughly six percent below its rating is finished, even if the fan still runs. Anything reading near zero, or showing a short, is definitely faulty.

Heat is the main enemy here, with voltage stress close behind.
A capacitor in a hot cabinet ages faster, since every 10 K above its rating roughly halves its life. Meanwhile surges and high supply voltage both stress it further. Replace it as routine
The strongest advice in this whole guide is very simple.
Change the run capacitor every time you change a fan motor. It costs very little. It removes the most common cause of a repeat visit. Best of all, it takes two minutes while everything is already apart.
For safe working practice, follow the appliance instructions and the electrical safety guidance in IEC standards.
Keep the old part until the job is signed off. A photo of the printed rating settles any later argument about whether the right value went back in, and it takes seconds.
