Transportation & Rail Equipment One-Stop Fan Platform
A rail-grade RT series already benchmarked part-for-part against European brands — plus the EC axial, backward-curved, forward multi-wing and mixed-flow platforms behind them, applied across rail transit, trucks, marine and containers.
Why LONGWELL for Transportation & Rail
Five reasons mobile-equipment OEMs shortlist LONGWELL — each one tied to a released platform, a benchmarked part number or a test report, not to a brochure claim.
Dedicated rail programme platform
The LWBE(RT) and LWBA(RT) series — 280 to 400 mm class — is already specified into traction and auxiliary converters, air-conditioning exhaust units, inverter cooling units and locomotive filter cubicles.
One BOM across six incumbent brands
EBM, Rosenberg, ZIEHL-ABEGG, Airscrew, SIEMENS and NICOTRA/Gebhardt footprints are mapped model-for-model in the RT benchmarking matrix — see §3.
From 12 V mobile to 110 V vehicle bus
12 / 24 / 26 / 48 V mobile platforms are released; 80 V DC (50–100 V) and 110 V DC (60–143 V) vehicle buses have been evaluated and quoted on real programmes.
One EC motor platform behind all of them
Axial, backward-curved centrifugal, forward multi-wing centrifugal, mixed-flow and EC blowers — the right wheel for each on-board air path, not one wheel forced into every duty.
Original PDFs in one business day
Aerodynamic figures tested per AMCA 210/211, L10 bearing life to ISO 281, EMC to EN 55014 / FCC Part 15 — issued as original reports, complimentary for project-intent customers.
Why Transportation Is a Strategic Platform for LONGWELL
Transportation concentrates every capability the rest of the fan business develops separately. Wide-temperature electronics come from the heat-pump and cold-chain programmes. High-static compact wheels come from the EC retrofit range. Vibration, potting and surface-finish discipline come from years of export manufacturing behind LONGWELL's 35-year history and motor exports to 30+ countries.
The demand side is moving the same way. As ZIEHL-ABEGG frames it on their mobile applications segment page, road vehicles are going electric and low-noise in cities, rail keeps expanding from metros to high-speed, and containers — refrigerated, energy-storage or generator — all need fans that survive salt, dust and fluctuating temperatures. Every one of those duties maps to a LONGWELL platform released today.
Where LONGWELL's rail engagement starts is specific: rail transit, public transport, automotive electronics and elevator cooling — the four applications the LWFE3G160 and LWBE3G190 rail variants were developed for — and the RT series that carries them into traction converters and filter cubicles.

4 Mobile Segments, One Fan Platform
The same four segments the leading European suppliers organise their mobile business around — each with its own failure modes, and each mapped to released LONGWELL platforms.
Rail & Rail Transit
Traction and auxiliary converters, saloon and driver-cab HVAC, air-conditioning exhaust units, inverter cooling units, locomotive filter cubicles.
Trucks & Transport Refrigeration
Reefer and deep-freeze trailers, vans and mobile refrigeration units; cab HVAC; automotive electronics cooling; e-mobility auxiliary cooling.
Marine Applications
Cabin and saloon HVAC, engine and machine rooms, bilge ventilation, galley extraction — from cargo ships to passenger liners.
Containers
Refrigerated containers (reefer), energy-storage containers, generator enclosures and data-centre containers.
5 Impeller Families and Their On-Board Roles
One EC motor driving source, five wheel philosophies. Selecting on board starts from the air path — then the wheel follows.
Axial fans
Mainstay of air-conditioning systems — condensers, saloon and cab air supply, machine-room ventilation.
Backward centrifugal
Auxiliary systems and air conditioning — converter cabinets, inverter cooling, filter cubicles, higher-static positions.
Forward multi-wing centrifugal
Air-conditioning systems needing high static pressure in a small envelope — compact rail and public-transport HVAC.
Mixed-flow fans
Auxiliary-system duty between axial and centrifugal — pressure higher than an axial, straighter path than a scroll.
EC fans & blowers
The EC motor is the driving source across all five families — speed-controllable, brushless, demand-matched.

What rail duty demands from the fan
Vibration and shock, continuously
Roof-mounted and underfloor equipment sees random vibration and shock for the vehicle's whole life. Bearing choice, PCB potting and impeller surface finish are engineering decisions, not options.
−25 to +60 °C — and −40 °C starts
Rolling-stock HVAC specifications routinely call for −25 to +60 °C; cross-reference targets in this segment reach −40 °C start-up. Cold-start capability is verified, not assumed.
Tonal content, not just dB(A)
Passengers complain about the blade-pass tone, not the overall level. Wheel philosophy and speed control are chosen to keep tonal content down at full load — where the HVAC unit is loudest.
Rail standards — cited as requirements, stated honestly
The compliance framework ZIEHL-ABEGG publishes for railway technology is the market's requirement set, and we quote it as exactly that: what your programme will demand. The third column is LONGWELL's actual position on each item — including where we say no.
| Standard | What it demands |
|---|---|
| DIN EN 50155 Rolling stock · electronic equipment | Supply-voltage range, temperature class, EMC, shock and vibration requirements applied to the fan's electronics. |
| DIN EN 61373 Shock and vibration tests | Random-vibration and shock profiles by category and class (Cat 1 Class A/B for body-mounted equipment). |

Truck & Reefer Duty · Set Points That Cannot Drift
Transport refrigeration is judged by one metric: the cold chain never breaks. The fans must run for the whole journey, survive loading shocks and weather, and modulate precisely when doors open.
Weather, UV and road shock
Snow, rain, heat, cold, UV radiation — plus vibration and shock from driving, loading and unloading, on top of the fan's own movement. Materials and coatings are chosen for the road, not the lab.
Demand-based speed control
EC drives let the system hold the set point to the degree and compensate door-open transients by adjusting fan speed — supporting the relevant transport, storage and hygiene requirements.
Protection matched to the position
Composite or aluminium impellers, insulated and gas-tight builds, special heat, cold and dust protection — specified per position rather than per product family.
Typical transport set points the system must hold
| Cargo | Set point | Fan implication |
|---|---|---|
| Frozen fish | ≤ −18 °C constant | Continuous condenser duty; any downtime risks the whole load |
| Frozen meat / egg products | ≈ −14 °C | Steady-state evaporator & condenser airflow |
| Fresh meat, sausage, fresh fish | ≈ 0 °C, max 2–3 °C | Tight modulation; EC speed control earns its keep here |
| Dairy products | ≈ 4 °C | Low-load precision; partial-load efficiency matters |
| Flowers, fruit, vegetables | +4 to +8 °C | Multi-zone trailers run separate set points at once |

Salt, Movement and Sealed Boxes
Ships and containers share one truth: the fan runs continuously, the air is hostile, and service windows are far away. The design conversation is about corrosion class, continuous duty and standard dimensions that fit cramped spaces.
Marine — what the segment demands
Ventilation on board runs in continuous operation under constant movement, shock, vibration, humidity and salty air. Fans are needed in nearly every area: wheelhouse and accommodation HVAC, engine and machine rooms, bilge ventilation where exhaust gases and condensate collect, galleys, and reefer-container cooling on cargo ships. Systems inside watertight areas or fire zones must be designed as self-sufficient, and fans for potentially explosive atmospheres need the appropriate approval.
Ships sailing internationally are subject to the rules of classification societies — DNV, ABS, BV and peers under the IACS umbrella. LONGWELL supplies to these requirements as programme items: the corrosion-protection builds, water-resistant motor options and material selections are engineered per vessel and position, with classification testing scoped honestly at enquiry rather than implied.
- Axial + centrifugal coverage — single- or dual-duct HVAC, machinery ventilation, spark-free and water/gas-tight builds evaluated per programme.
- Corrosion strategy — impeller material (composite / aluminium / steel), coating system and motor build fixed per position; 96 h salt-spray programme per §6.
- Retrofit-friendly — compact frames and standard dimensions suit newbuild and refit alike.
Containers — the sealed-box duty
A container is a flexible space that must hold its climate regardless of ambient: refrigerated containers protecting perishable cargo, energy-storage containers, generator enclosures, data-centre containers. All of them need compact, standard-dimension fans that survive dust, salt and fluctuating temperatures.
LONGWELL's cold-chain programme already supplies this duty: the same EC axial platform lines that serve supermarket refrigeration serve reefer and ESS containers, which is why one supplier file can cover transport, warehouse and retail refrigeration together.
ZIEHL-ABEGG's container range spans reefer, ESS, generator and data-centre containers with AC or EC drives and biomimetic wheels. LONGWELL's counterpart mapping for container positions follows the same platform logic — EC axial for condenser and ventilation duty, backward-curved where static rises.
Recommended configuration · marine & containers
| Position | Platform | Duty note |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation / cabin HVAC | LWAE3G EC axial | Condenser and supply air; corrosion-protected builds; continuous-duty bearings |
| Engine & machine rooms | LWAE3G large-frame axial | High-volume extraction and air renewal; robust mechanical builds |
| Bilge & humid spaces | LWAE3G with water-resistant motor build | Corrosion protection and water-resistant motors are the spec, not options |
| Reefer container cooling | LWAE3G / LWAE DC axial | Cold-chain continuity; same platform family as truck reefer duty |
| ESS / genset / DC containers | LWBE3G backward-curved + LWAE3G | High-static enclosure cooling; wide ambient; compact standard dimensions |

Equipment maintenance and integration contractor replacing in-service European-brand fans on rail and industrial ventilation equipment.
Cross-reference request and technical response the same day, 4 May 2022 · 4 emails
- Target R3G310-AN13-11: 110 V DC (87–143 V), 2,500 rpm, 345 W, 3.2 A, 2,785 m³/h at 0 Pa, IP42, ambient −40 to +50 °C, 5 kg, 310 mm frame.
- Plus an AC forward-curved scroll fan that had to keep identical mounting holes and dimensions.

Transport and industrial air-conditioning group — procurement for on-board and industrial AC units.
First contact 15 Jan 2024 → evaluation scope agreed 19 Jan 2024 (4 days) · 5 emails
- Targets included D1G133-DC55-16 (110 V DC, 60–143 V, 120 W, 1,100 m³/h at 560 Pa, IP44), R3G190-RY87-P2 (80 V DC, 245 W, 4,800 rpm, IP54), R3G250-RR09-P1 (110 V DC, 540 W, 500 m³/h at 1,500 Pa, 3,800 rpm) and R3G280-RR10-P1.
- Requirements included static pressure up to 2,000 Pa, Modbus RS-485 with a floating status relay, and IP44 / IP54 / IP55 by position.
- Evaluation covered both tooling match and control-board development against the LWBE3G and LWAE3G platforms. On this kind of programme the EC driver board is what has to survive the wide DC bus, the cold start and years of vibration — which is why potting and isolation are specified on the board, not on the fan.
05 · Surface finish change after a transit review
Rail and vehicle climate-control (HVAC) group — international procurement department.
Transit review opened 18 Dec 2023 → finish change approved 13 Jan 2024 (26 days) · 7 emails
- Following a transit-damage review, the impeller surface treatment was changed — the fix was made on the part, not argued in the claim.
- A mill-finish backward-curved wheel was then supplied for the customer's approval ahead of series build. Part photograph and approval record are on file in the published case profile.
06 · 24 V DC cross-flow for bus, refrigerated vehicle and air-curtain positions
Italian equipment and ventilation-systems distributor evaluating 24 V DC and 220 V AC cross-flow fans for air curtains, buses and refrigerated trucks.
First contact 13 Apr 2021 → samples delivered and coding clarified 22 Jan 2022 (284 days) · 83 emails · Recorded order value: under US$5k
- LWCD-65820M-20 — Ø65 mm, 24 V, 1.80 A, 1,800 rpm, 65 Pa, 920 m³/h, 53 dB(A).
- LWCD-651100M-30 — 24 V, 4.20 A, 1,600 rpm, 55 Pa, 1,225 m³/h, 56 dB(A).
- LWCD-60870M-20 — 24 V, 1.0 A, 1,800 rpm, 52 Pa, 550 m³/h, 49 dB(A).
- Single, double and triple refer to the number of impeller sections coupled inside one housing — clarified in writing, because the internal and external model coding for these variants is a recurring source of confusion.
- A 284-day, 83-email thread is the honest cost of bringing a distribution account onto a DC platform. The same part then covers bus, refrigerated-vehicle and cab air distribution, which is why the segment table lists it once.
Source: all six threads — with the roof-unit nameplate photograph, the mill-finish impeller photograph and the 24 s EC-driver-board clip — are published in the Rail and Vehicle HVAC case profile on longwellfans.com. Model definitions, current availability and datasheets: select.longwellfans.com.
