Fan pricing looks murky from outside, although it is fairly predictable once you know what sits inside the number.

Motor and electronics dominate. Material comes next. Everything else is smaller than buyers usually assume.

Short answer
On a typical EC fan, the motor and electronics account for roughly half the cost, materials for a quarter, and labour, testing, packaging and overhead for the rest. Tooling amortisation matters only at low volume. Certification is a fixed cost per variant, so many small variants cost far more than one large family.

Proportions shift with size; on a large industrial fan the material share rises considerably.

Notice that assembly labour is a small share. Pressure on labour cost rarely moves a fan price much, whereas a motor specification change moves it immediately.

What actually moves the number

  • Motor technology, since EC costs considerably more than shaded pole.
  • Wheel material and construction, particularly steel against moulded polymer.
  • Volume, because setup and tooling spread across more units.
  • Certification requirements, which are fixed per variant.
  • Specified coating or corrosion protection.
  • Finally, packaging specification, which is larger than people expect.

That last item surprises buyers. Export packaging for a large fan can be several percent of the total.

Why volume changes everything

Several costs land per batch rather than per unit, so fan pricing falls as quantity rises.

Line setup, material minimums, test setup and paperwork all behave this way. So a price at 50 units and a price at 5,000 sit on different curves. Ask one supplier for both, and the break points show up straight away.

A useful request
Ask for pricing at three quantities rather than one. The shape of the curve reveals where the setup costs sit, and it shows you the volume worth aiming for.

Tooling and when it matters

A moulded impeller needs a steel tool, and that cost has to land somewhere in the fan pricing.

Spread over 500 units it swamps the price. Spread over 5,000 it becomes a rounding error. So tooling is really a volume question, and it usually only pays above roughly 2,000 units a year.

Comparing two quotations fairly

  1. Confirm both quote the same duty point, not the same model number.
  2. Check the motor technology and efficiency class in each.
  3. Compare materials and coating rather than assuming they match.
  4. Confirm which certifications are included.
  5. Check packaging specification and whether export packing is included.
  6. Finally, compare the delivery term, since FOB and DDP are not the same price.

Where negotiation actually works

Pressure on the headline number moves fan pricing very little. Changing the structure of the order moves it a lot.

Commit to an annual volume rather than one order. Take a standard variant instead of a special. Simplify the packaging where the route allows. Meanwhile merge several similar variants into one, since setup and certification cost sits per variant rather than per unit.

One last point applies to every quotation. Ask what would have to change for the price to drop ten percent. A serious supplier will name two or three specific items, and at least one of them is usually something you can live without.

Why is one supplier so much cheaper?

Usually a different motor efficiency class, thinner material, less testing or a different delivery term. Align those four and the gap normally narrows sharply.

Does a bigger order always mean a better price?

Up to a point, since setup and material minimums stop shrinking eventually. Beyond that the curve flattens, so ask where the break points actually are.

How much does certification add?

It is a fixed cost per variant rather than per unit, so it barely registers at high volume and dominates at low volume. That is why consolidating variants saves real money.
