What the AHU maker specified

A European OEM building commercial air conditioning equipment asked us for the full specification package on an AC centrifugal blower.

They had already shortlisted the model from catalog data. Now they wanted verified papers to design into a packaged air handling unit. Furthermore that unit sits outdoors.

The constraints

  • First, nominal supply was 220 VAC, with tolerance from 198V to 242V across European grids.
  • Second, dual 50/60Hz compatibility was mandatory.
  • Next, the fan had to fit a 316mm by 308mm footprint inside a finished chassis.
  • Meanwhile noise could not exceed 70 dB(A).
  • Finally, full CE certification was non-negotiable, with performance validated to ISO 5801.

One requirement stood well apart from the rest. The unit had to work from -40C in a hard winter up to +60C under peak summer solar load on an outdoor cabinet.

Qualifying the AC centrifugal blower

We validated the customer choice quickly. However, the interesting work lay in proving the temperature range, not the airflow.

Why an external rotor motor

The motor sits inside the impeller hub rather than behind it. Consequently the assembly is far shallower than a normal fan and motor pairing. That is what let it fit the tight chassis.

EC was never on the table

Their system runs on simple switched mains. Meanwhile a DC bus or built-in controls would add cost and complexity to a product tier that never asked for variable speed. So an AC centrifugal blower was the right answer here, not a compromise.

The temperature range is a grease problem

In practice most of the engineering went into that -40C to +60C span, under our ThermoFlex methodology.

Standard bearing grease fails at both ends. It stiffens in deep cold, so the motor fights it on every start. Meanwhile steady heat makes it degrade and thin. Neither failure is dramatic. Both simply shorten life.

We therefore specified a wide-temperature grease for the maintenance-free deep groove ball bearings. In short, that one component choice makes the quoted range real rather than hopeful.

The rest of the build

Class F windings are rated to 155C, so a +60C ambient leaves plenty of margin. Meanwhile the impeller is galvanized sheet steel, which gives an outdoor unit the corrosion resistance it needs at sensible cost and weight.

Here the approved specification sheet confirmed every requirement, from the voltage window to the environmental range.

Why the OEM chose us

Beyond the datasheet, four things decided this AC centrifugal blower.

  • Certification without the shipping. CE marking was guaranteed through our China-local TUV NORD Notified Body, which is considerably faster than sending samples to Europe. That protected their launch date for the new AHU series.
  • No extrapolation needed. The P-Q curve, noise levels and power draw are all validated in-house to AMCA 210/211 and ISO 5801 methods. Consequently their engineers modeled the system on measurements rather than estimates.
  • Reliability without an EC premium. This project wanted a wide-temperature fan, not a controllable one. So the customer paid for the temperature range and not for control electronics the application would never have used.
  • Built for the hard end. A -40C to +60C range for an AC centrifugal blower sits outside standard commercial limits. Validating it through ThermoFlex component selection and testing is the difference between a fan that survives a winter and one that does not.

See our centrifugal fan range, or the air handling unit section. Airflow testing follows AMCA 210.

Questions about this blower

What is the L10 life at +60C?

The stated figure is 30,000 hours, calculated at a 40C reference. The fan is rated for continuous duty to +60C, although running constantly at that limit does speed up bearing wear. So for sustained operation above 50C, ask us for a design review. We can either give a tighter life estimate or propose a different bearing arrangement.

Can this run on a VFD?

No, and this is worth being clear about. The motor is a permanent-split capacitor type, which is not built for drive control. A standard VFD causes excess heat, vibration and a much shorter life. Where variable speed is genuinely needed, take a direct-fit model from our SmartEC series instead, with 0-10V or PWM control built in.

How does performance differ between 50Hz and 60Hz?

Performance follows supply frequency directly. At 60Hz this AC centrifugal blower peaks near 2,987 m3/h and roughly 325 Pa. By contrast, at 50Hz the lower speed gives around 2,500 m3/h and about 250 Pa. Both are safe and efficient anywhere inside the 198-242 VAC window.

Why does cold weather shorten fan life at all?

Because of what it does to grease, not to metal. Cold grease resists motion, so starting torque rises and the motor pulls more current on every start. Over thousands of cold starts that wears bearings and windings alike. In short, a wide-temperature grease is a small part with an outsized effect.
