A blower running with no airflow is oddly common, and it always has a mechanical or system explanation rather than an electrical one.

So work through the list in order. Four causes account for nearly every case.

Short answer
Check rotation direction first, since a reversed wheel moves very little air. Then check whether the wheel is loose on the shaft, whether a damper or duct is blocked, and whether the wheel is heavily fouled. A wheel spinning freely on its shaft looks perfectly normal from outside the cabinet.

Cause 1: wrong rotation

Forward-curved and backward-curved wheels only work in one direction. Reversed, they lose 60 to 70 percent of their airflow while still drawing power.

This happens after a motor replacement, after rewiring, or when a three-phase supply gets two phases swapped. Meanwhile the fan sounds broadly normal, which is why it fools people.

Cause 2: the wheel is loose on the shaft

A set screw that has backed off lets the shaft spin inside the hub.

From outside, the motor sounds like it is running normally. Inside, the wheel is barely turning, so there is no airflow at all. Consequently this is the fault people chase electrically for hours.

Quick check
Isolate the supply, then mark the shaft and the hub with a pen. Run briefly and stop. If the marks no longer line up, the wheel is slipping.

Cause 3: blockage or closed damper

  1. Check the return grille, since furniture blocks it more often than anything else.
  2. Then look for a collapsed filter, because a folded one can seal the opening.
  3. Fire and volume dampers come next, as either may have failed shut.
  4. Inspect flexible duct for crushing or a disconnected joint.
  5. Look for a backdraft damper stuck closed at the discharge.
  6. Finally, check the outside terminal for a blocked mesh or a bird nest.

A disconnected duct in a ceiling void is the classic version. The fan moves plenty of air, although none of it reaches the room, so everybody blames the blower.

Cause 4: a heavily fouled wheel

Dirt does not usually stop airflow completely, although it can reduce it enough to feel like nothing.

Forward-curved wheels are worst affected, since grease and lint bridge across the narrow blade passages. Once the passages fill, the wheel behaves like a smooth drum and moves very little air.

Less common causes worth knowing

  • First, a cracked or broken belt on older belt-driven equipment.
  • A wheel that shifted along the shaft, so it now runs outside the inlet ring.
  • A missing or damaged inlet cone, since some designs depend on it entirely.
  • An axial fan in stall, which makes plenty of noise and very little air.
  • A blocked coil face, although that restricts flow rather than stopping it.
  • Finally, a fan sitting at very low commanded speed after a control fault.

That last one catches people out on variable speed systems. So check the commanded speed before you assume a mechanical fault.

It is also worth checking whether anything changed recently. A new filter grade, a rebalanced system or a fresh motor all appear shortly before complaints about no airflow, and the timing usually points straight at the cause.

How to check airflow properly

Feeling the vents is not measurement, and it misleads badly on low-velocity systems.

Use an anemometer at a grille, or take a static pressure reading across the fan and compare against the curve. Meanwhile a temperature rise measurement across a heat exchanger gives a good indication on heating systems.

Can a motor run and move no air at all?

Yes, easily. A loose wheel, a reversed rotation or a fully blocked path all produce a normal-sounding motor with nothing coming out of the vents.

How do I check rotation without opening everything?

Look through the inlet with a torch while the fan runs, or compare the wheel movement against the rotation arrow on the housing. Never put a hand near a running wheel.

Would a dirty filter cause complete loss of airflow?

Rarely on its own, although a collapsed filter can seal the opening entirely. More often it reduces airflow enough that the system feels dead at the far registers.

The fan is fine but one room gets nothing. Why?

That is a distribution problem rather than a fan problem. So check the branch damper, the flexible duct, and whether the take-off is still connected up in the ceiling void.

When a blower runs with no airflow, check rotation, the wheel fixing, the air path and the wheel condition. One of those four is nearly always the answer, and none of them needs a meter.
