A furnace blower that gets loud is telling you something, and the sound narrows it down fast.
So start by listening rather than by opening panels. A rumble, a squeal and a rattle all point in different directions.
Match the sound first. A rumble usually means a dirty or unbalanced wheel. Squealing points to bearings or a slipping belt, while a rattle means something loose. Meanwhile a roar that started suddenly is often a restricted filter or a closed duct, so check airflow before blaming the blower itself.

Dirt is the usual suspect
A furnace blower wheel has thirty to fifty narrow blade passages, and every one collects dust.
Loading is never even, so the wheel drifts out of balance. Then vibration rises, the noise deepens and the bearings wear faster than they should.

Airflow restriction sounds like a fan problem
A clogged filter or a closed register makes the whole system roar, even though nothing mechanical has changed.
- Check the filter first, since it causes more of these calls than anything else.
- Then look for closed or blocked supply registers around the house.
- Check the return grille, because that is often furniture-blocked.
- Inspect flexible duct for crushing above ceilings.
- Feel for high airflow noise at a single register, which suggests imbalance.
- Finally, measure static pressure if the noise persists.
Restriction also overheats the motor, so it shortens the life of the very part you are worried about.
Bearings and belts
A squeal that appears only at start-up usually means a slipping belt on older equipment.
A squeal that stays constant, or a grinding rumble, points at bearings instead. Meanwhile a bearing that is going will get worse rather than better, so plan the replacement instead of waiting.

Loose parts and duct noise
Rattles are rarely the blower itself, although the blower makes them audible.
- Check every access panel and screw around the cabinet.
- Look at the blower mounting bolts and isolating grommets.
- Inspect duct joints near the unit for movement.
- Check the flexible connector, if there is one, for splits.
- Look for objects sitting on top of the ductwork.
- Finally, listen with the fan on continuous mode to locate the source.
A boom at start-up usually comes from duct panels flexing rather than from the fan.
Sheet metal expands as warm air enters, and a large flat panel pops as it moves. Adding a stiffening bead or a flexible connector at the unit fixes it, and neither job touches the blower at all.
When to stop and call somebody
Some sounds mean shut it down rather than investigate further.
Metallic scraping means the wheel is touching the housing. A burning smell means the motor is overheating. Repeated breaker trips mean an electrical fault. In all three cases, switch off and get a qualified technician.

One last note on expectations. A furnace blower is never silent, and a new one on an old duct system can sound louder rather than quieter, simply because it moves more air through the same undersized ducts.
