An overheating fan motor rarely fails because the motor is weak. Something else is making it work harder or preventing it from cooling.
Because insulation life roughly halves for every 10 K above rating, a motor running hot is on a countdown rather than merely uncomfortable.
Check airflow first, since most fan motors rely on the airstream for cooling. Then check the run capacitor, supply voltage, bearing drag and ambient temperature. A motor that trips its thermal protector and restarts twenty minutes later is almost always suffering from restriction rather than from an internal fault.
Cause 1: restricted airflow
This is the biggest single cause, and it is also the cheapest to fix.
- A clogged filter starves the motor of cooling air.
- A dirty wheel raises the load and therefore the current.
- Blocked guards or fins stop heat escaping from the motor body.
- Closed dampers push a forward-curved fan up its power curve.
- A blocked coil face restricts flow through the whole unit.
- Finally, debris in an outdoor guard traps heat around the motor.
Cleaning the filter and the wheel settles a large share of overheating fan motor complaints without buying a single part.
Cause 2: capacitor problems
A weak run capacitor on a single phase motor raises current and heat straight away.
The symptoms include slow starting, reduced speed, a hum before running and a motor that is hot to touch. Meanwhile a capacitor can measure close to rating when cold and fail once warm, which explains intermittent faults.

Cause 3: supply voltage
Motors draw more current at low voltage, because they still have to produce the same output.
So a long cable run, a loose terminal or an overloaded distribution board all raise winding temperature. Meanwhile phase imbalance on three phase supplies has the same effect, and it is easy to overlook.
Measure voltage under load rather than at rest, since a loose connection only shows itself when current flows.
Cause 4: mechanical drag
Anything that loads the motor mechanically shows up as an overheating fan motor.
- Failing bearings, which add friction and eventually seize.
- A wheel rubbing the inlet ring after shifting on the shaft.
- Belt tension set far too tight on a belt-driven fan.
- A bent shaft, usually after transport damage or a heavy knock.
- An oversized wheel fitted during a previous repair.
- Finally, a wheel loaded with dirt, which raises torque demand.
Spin the wheel by hand with the supply isolated. It should turn freely and coast for a second or two.
Cause 5: an overheating fan motor in hot surroundings
Every motor carries a maximum ambient rating, and roof plant rooms regularly exceed it.

Where ambient cannot be reduced, specify a motor rated for it rather than hoping the protector will cope.
Reading the thermal protector
Most fan motors contain a bimetallic cut-out that opens when the winding gets too hot.
A motor that runs twenty minutes, stops, then restarts later is cycling on that protector. So the protector works fine, and the overheating fan motor has a cause elsewhere.

How hot should a fan motor get?
Warm to the touch is normal. Too hot to hold your hand on for a few seconds usually means it is running near or above its rated temperature rise.
Will a bigger motor solve overheating?
Rarely, since it treats the symptom rather than the cause. Fix the restriction, the capacitor or the drag, and the original motor usually runs perfectly well.
Can I add a cooling fan to the motor?
On larger motors, forced ventilation kits exist and work well. On small integrated fan motors it is usually simpler to improve airflow through the unit itself.
Does an overheating motor use more electricity?
Yes. Heat is wasted energy, and the higher current that causes it shows up directly on the meter as well as on the winding temperature.
An overheating fan motor is almost always a symptom. Restore airflow, check the capacitor and supply, then remove any drag, and the temperature looks after itself.
