A motor nameplate is the most useful document on any fan, although most people read only two lines of it.
Learn the whole plate and you can order a replacement confidently, diagnose overheating and check whether the installation matches the design.
The essential fields are rated output, voltage and frequency, full load current, speed, insulation class, temperature rise, duty rating, protection rating and frame size. Full load current is what the motor draws at rated output, so use it for cable and protection sizing rather than for estimating fan power.
The core motor nameplate fields decoded

That last note catches people out constantly. So a 2.2 kW motor nameplate does not mean the fan takes 2.2 kW from the supply.
Full load amps and what it is for
Full load current appears on every motor nameplate, and people misuse it more than any other field.
It applies at rated output and rated voltage, so a lightly loaded motor draws less. However, the relationship is not straight, because magnetising current keeps flowing whatever the load.
So use it for cable sizing, breaker selection and overload settings. Do not use it to estimate how much power the fan is actually consuming.
Speed tells you more than it looks
The speed on a motor nameplate already allows for slip, which is why you see 1,440 rpm rather than 1,500.
- Around 2,850 rpm means a two-pole motor on 50 Hz.
- A figure near 1,440 rpm means four poles on 50 Hz.
- Roughly 960 rpm means six poles on 50 Hz.
- On 60 Hz the equivalents are roughly 3,450, 1,750 and 1,150 rpm.
- A larger gap from synchronous speed indicates higher slip and more rotor heating.
- Finally, an EC fan states a controlled speed range rather than one figure.
So pole count matters on replacement. Fitting a two-pole motor where four poles belonged doubles the fan speed and roughly octuples the power.
Insulation class and temperature rise
Together, these two fields predict service life better than anything else on the plate.
Class F insulation tolerates 155 °C. A class B rise means the design targets about 130 °C. That 25 K margin roughly quadruples expected insulation life, so the pairing is worth looking for.
Rise figures assume a maximum ambient, usually 40 °C. A motor in a 55 °C plant room exceeds its class even at rated rise. Our insulation class guide covers the arithmetic.
Duty rating and what S1 means
Duty codes say how long the motor may run, and they matter more on fans than people assume.
- S1 means continuous duty, which is what most fans need.
- S2 means short-time duty for a stated period, such as 30 minutes.
- S3 means intermittent duty, with a stated duty cycle percentage.
- Higher codes cover starting and braking duties, although fans rarely use them.
- So a motor rated S2 will overheat on a continuous application.
- Finally, always check the duty code before reusing a motor in a new role.

Motor nameplate fields people miss
Several smaller items become important at exactly the wrong moment, so read them now.
Frame size determines mounting compatibility. Rotation direction may be stated and is often viewed from a specific end. Capacitor value appears on single-phase plates. Bearing designations appear on larger motors. Meanwhile the serial number is what a manufacturer needs to identify the exact build.

Nameplate FAQ
Is the kW rating the power the motor consumes?
No, it is the mechanical output at the shaft. Input power is higher, since it equals output divided by efficiency.
Can I use a motor at a different voltage?
Only if the plate lists that voltage, or if the motor is reconnectable. Running outside the rated range raises current and temperature quickly.
What if the nameplate is unreadable?
Measure the frame, shaft and mounting, then contact the manufacturer with the serial number if any part of it survives. Our obsolete fan guide covers reconstruction.
Does the nameplate show efficiency?
Often yes on newer motors, as an IE class or a percentage. Older plates frequently omit it entirely.
