Replacing an obsolete fan is detective work. The model has gone, the maker may have gone, and the paperwork usually left with whoever filed it.

So you rebuild the requirement from the installation itself, then find something that meets it.

Short answer
Measure the actual duty point rather than trusting the old nameplate. Record every mechanical and electrical interface, including mounting, wheel diameter, rotation, supply and control. Then find a fan whose tested curve passes through your measured point, and validate it in place before ordering a batch.

Step 1: measure what the fan is actually doing

The first choice may have been wrong, and twenty years of changes will have moved the duty point anyway.

  1. Measure airflow by traverse or at the grilles.
  2. Measure static pressure across the fan, with clean and loaded filters.
  3. Record absorbed power with a clamp meter over a working day.
  4. Measure fan speed with a tachometer.
  5. Note ambient temperature and altitude for density correction.
  6. Finally, record the control method actually in use.

That measured point is the real specification. The nameplate describes an intention from decades ago.

Step 2: build the interface record

Rotation catches people out because it can be quoted from either end. Always state which end you measured from.

Step 3: find candidates properly

A visual match is not a match. Cross-reference tables are a starting point rather than an answer.

Send the measured duty point, the interface record and photographs to two or three suppliers. Then ask each to mark your point on their tested curve rather than simply naming a model.

The useful question
Ask where your duty point sits relative to peak efficiency on the proposed fan. A model that reaches your point at the far right of its curve will be noisy and short-lived, even though it technically meets the requirement.

Step 4: plan for the differences

Almost no replacement fits perfectly, so decide early what you will adapt.

  • An adapter plate solves most mounting mismatches cheaply.
  • A transition piece handles a different discharge size.
  • A control interface change may need building system work.
  • Different depth may need cabinet modification.
  • A different wheel diameter changes inlet clearance requirements.
  • Finally, a different weight may need the support frame checking.

Deciding this before ordering avoids the situation where a correct fan arrives and cannot be fitted.

Step 5: validate before committing

Fit one, measure it, and only then order the rest.

Compare measured airflow, pressure and power against the original readings. Check noise as installed rather than in free air. Meanwhile run the control through its whole range, since that is where interface differences show up.

Treat it as an upgrade opportunity

An obsolete fan is usually old technology as well as an old part number.

Swapping a fixed-speed AC fan for an EC unit usually saves around 30 percent of fan energy, and it adds control the original never had. So the replacement often costs less over its life than a like-for-like substitute.

Finally, record everything you learn. The next person facing this fan will have exactly the same problem, and a single page of measured data and interface dimensions turns a week of detective work into an afternoon.

Can I use a cross-reference table?

As a starting point only. Tables match on physical dimensions rather than on your actual duty point, so always confirm against a tested curve.

What if I cannot measure the duty point?

Estimate it from the system: filter, coil and duct resistance at the design airflow. State the assumption clearly, since it is an estimate rather than a measurement.

Should I replace like for like?

Only if the original was correctly sized and the system has not changed. In most cases the replacement is a chance to correct both.

How do I handle an obsolete EC fan?

Record the control interface and failsafe configuration as well as the mechanical details. Those settings are easy to overlook and awkward to reconstruct afterwards.
