Customer Requirement

A leading automation equipment manufacturer approached us with a critical thermal management challenge: they needed a compact DC axial fan to be integrated into their automation controller. The cooling solution has to provide reliable airflow performance without requiring additional power conversion components for a densely packed PCB assembly.

Based on the controller’s thermal simulation data and operating conditions, our engineering team reverse-engineered the fan performance requirements to define the optimal cooling specification.

The fan designed will deliver a minimum airflow of 42 CFM (71 m³/h) at free air and generate enough static pressure, at least 5.51 mmH₂O, to maintain airflow through intake filters and past obstructing components. The target of  the noise was a maxium of 38 dBA to meet workplace environment standards.

Engineering Solution

The engineering team immediately focused on the LWAD8025 DC axial fan series. This 80mm frame size is a standard offering, providing multiple performance points. Operating at 3600 RPM from a 24 VDC supply, it delivers 42.02 CFM and a maximum static pressure of 5.51 mmH₂O. Its 38 dBA noise level was at the acceptable limit for this type of industrial equipment. The key decision was the bearing system. To meet the 50,000-hour life expectancy requirement, two-ball bearings were specified over sleeve bearing options. Ball bearings offer superior longevity and stability, particularly in the higher ambient temperatures expected inside an electronics cabinet. The frame of and impeller of the fan are made from PBT plastic with a UL rating and the motor design includes impedance-based locked rotor protection.

Q: What is the expected L10 life expectancy if the fan operates continuously at its maximum rated temperature of 60°C?

A: The stated 50,000-hour L10 life is rated at a 25°C ambient temperature. Bearing life is inversely affected by heat. A general engineering rule suggests that for every 10°C rise in continuous operating temperature, the bearing life is halved. For applications needing longer life at high temperatures, we can propose alternative high-temperature grease or bearing systems.
