A fan speed controller looks like a simple component, and the wrong type quietly cooks the motor it is meant to control.
So the first job is matching the controller to the motor, and only then thinking about wiring.
Match the controller type to the motor first. Triac controllers suit shaded-pole and some PSC motors. Transformer controllers suit larger AC motors and run cooler. EC fans need a 0-10V or PWM signal instead, never a voltage controller. Always set a minimum speed, and always isolate and prove dead before wiring.

The motor datasheet says whether voltage control is allowed. Where it stays silent, assume a fan speed controller of that type is not suitable.
Triac against transformer controllers
Both reduce the effective voltage reaching the motor, and they do it very differently.
A triac chops the waveform, which is cheap and compact. However, the chopped waveform makes the motor buzz and run hotter, and it generates electrical interference.
A transformer controller supplies a genuine reduced sinusoidal voltage from tapped windings. Consequently the motor stays quieter and cooler, though the unit is larger and costs more.
Before you wire anything
- Confirm the controller is rated for the motor current, with margin.
- Confirm the motor permits voltage speed control at all.
- Isolate the supply and prove the circuit dead.
- Discharge any run capacitor before touching terminals.
- Photograph the existing wiring before disconnecting.
- Finally, check whether a minimum speed setting exists on the controller.

Wiring an AC controller
A fan speed controller of this type sits in series with the motor supply, so the wiring order is simple.
- Bring the incoming live and neutral to the controller supply terminals.
- Take the switched, controlled output to the motor live.
- Connect neutral through as the controller diagram shows.
- Bond the protective earth to the enclosure and to the motor.
- Route control wiring away from the switched output.
- Finally, set the minimum speed before first running the fan.
Minimum speed exists for a reason. Below it, the motor lacks torque to start reliably and its cooling collapses.
Wiring an EC fan instead
EC fans need a signal rather than a reduced voltage, which changes the wiring entirely.
Give the fan its full rated mains supply, then bring a separate control pair for the 0-10V or PWM signal. A 10 kΩ potentiometer wired to the fan internal supply gives simple manual control where no building system exists.
Fitting a triac or transformer controller to an EC fan can damage the input stage and will certainly not control it properly. The drive expects clean mains, and the signal does the controlling.
Commissioning and checks
A controller that works at full speed can still be wrong at low speed.
Run through the whole range and check the fan starts reliably from the minimum setting. Measure motor current at low speed, then feel the motor after twenty minutes. Speed controller FAQ
Can I use a light dimmer to control a fan?
No. Lighting dimmers are not rated for inductive loads, so they overheat and can fail dangerously. Use a controller specifically designed for motors.
Why does my fan buzz on the controller?
That is usually a triac controller chopping the waveform on a motor that dislikes it. A transformer controller normally cures it, at higher cost and size.
What minimum speed should I set?
Enough that the fan starts reliably and the motor stays cool, typically 30 to 50 percent on AC motors. EC fans manage far lower, though the electronics still need airflow.
Can one controller run several fans?
Yes, within its current rating, and all fans then run at the same speed. Add the motor currents and leave margin rather than working to the exact limit.
