Wear gloves, since sheet metal edges inside a hood are sharp and often coated. Protect the hob surface below, and let everything cool fully before starting. Meanwhile keep grease away from electrical connections during reassembly.
This is the only convenient chance to clean the impeller, the housing and the duct connection properly. Skipping it means the new motor starts life with the same restriction that shortened the last one.
Refitting and commissioning
A methodical refit prevents most callbacks, and it takes no longer.
- Transfer the wheel at the marked depth, without bending blades.
- Wire the speed taps exactly as photographed, insulating unused leads.
- Fit a new run capacitor as a matter of routine.
- Confirm rotation before refitting any covers.
- Check the damper opens fully at the lowest speed.
- Finally, measure airflow at the canopy face or check it with a smoke test.

Restoring the airflow you expect
A new range hood blower motor does not fix a restricted duct, and duct problems are very common in kitchen extraction.

Can I fit a universal motor?
Sometimes, provided voltage, speeds, rotation, shaft and mounting all match. Manufacturer parts remove the risk on models with unusual arrangements.
Should I replace the capacitor too?
Yes, wherever one is fitted. It is inexpensive and it removes one of the most common causes of a repeat failure.
How often should the hood be cleaned?
Filters monthly with regular cooking, and the impeller and housing at least annually. Heavy frying justifies more frequent attention.
