EMC for EC fans matters more than it did on the AC motors they replaced, because every EC fan contains a switching converter.
That converter is why the fan can control its own speed, and it is also why it generates electrical noise and leakage current.
Give every EC fan a solid protective earth, since the internal filter relies on it. Use screened twisted pair for control signals and earth the screen at one end only. Keep control cable away from mains runs. Finally, add up leakage current across all fans before choosing a residual current device, because several fans together will trip a small one.
Why EMC for EC fans starts at the earth terminal
An EC drive holds an input filter that sends high-frequency noise to earth.
Without a solid earth, that filter has nowhere to put the noise. So it ends up on the supply instead, and the fan body can sit at an unpleasant voltage.
So the earth wire is part of EMC for EC fans, not just a safety add-on.
Leakage current adds up
Filter capacitors deliberately pass a small current to earth, typically a few milliamps per fan.

A 30 mA residual current device may trip with as few as six or eight fans. So split arrays across several devices, or specify a type suited to higher leakage.
Screening the control cable
A 0-10V signal is a low-voltage analogue level, and it picks up noise easily.
- Use screened twisted pair rather than ordinary flex.
- Earth the screen at one end only, normally at the controller.
- Never earth the screen at both ends, since that creates a current loop.
- Keep the control run separate from mains cable throughout.
- Cross power cables at right angles where crossing is unavoidable.
- Finally, terminate unused cores rather than leaving them floating.

What poor practice actually causes
Poor EMC for EC fans produces a recognisable set of symptoms.
- Fan speed drifting or hunting with no change in demand.
- Odd readings on the building management system.
- Residual current devices tripping for no obvious reason.
- Interference on nearby sensors or communications.
- Bearing damage on larger drive-fed motors.
- Finally, a fan enclosure that gives a tingle when touched.
The last symptom means stop immediately and check the earth connection, because it indicates a genuine safety fault.
Bus wiring adds its own rules
A Modbus bus copes with noise far better than an analogue signal, although it still needs care.
Use proper RS-485 cable, terminate both ends of the bus, and run a signal common rather than leaning on earth. Meanwhile wire it as a daisy chain rather than a star, since stubs cause reflections.
Powering fans from different phases and then connecting their signal commons together can create a circulating current. Where that is unavoidable, use an isolated bus interface.
Designing an array
Arrays multiply every one of these issues, so plan EMC for EC fans across the whole wall rather than copying a single-fan diagram.
Add up total leakage before choosing protection. Bond every fan to one earth bar rather than daisy chaining earths. Keep the control bus away from the power feeds. Finally, make cable lengths as even as you can across the array.

Why does my RCD trip with several EC fans?
Leakage current from the input filters adds up. Split the fans across several devices, or specify protection rated for the total leakage the manufacturer states.
Should the control screen be earthed at both ends?
No. Earthing at both ends creates a loop that carries current and disturbs the signal. Earth at the controller end only unless the manufacturer says otherwise.
Can I run control cable in the same tray as power?
It is best avoided. Where the tray is shared, keep maximum separation, use a divider, and make sure the control cable is properly screened.
Do EC fans need a special earth?
They need a solid, low-impedance protective earth. That is standard practice rather than special, although it matters more here than with a plain induction motor.
