What the equipment OEM wanted
A commercial equipment OEM wanted a simple manual AC fan speed controller to pair with an axial fan they already use. The enquiry arrived with a photograph of a wall-mounted controller and very little else.
That brevity is itself useful. No airflow target, no pressure figure, no noise limit. Consequently this is not a precision job.
What they really want is variable speed added to a product already designed and signed off around one specific fan.
- 220 to 240VAC single phase at 50Hz.
- Manual, user-facing control, most likely wall mounted.
- An AC fan speed controller matching the existing fan, rather than a replacement for it.
- Low cost and immediate availability.
The situation is very common. An equipment maker wants a new feature without reopening a development cycle for the fan at the heart of the design.
Choosing the AC fan speed controller
Here the request named an AC-compatible controller, so the path was largely set. Even so, we weighed the alternatives before agreeing.
The EC upgrade we did not recommend
Moving to a full EC fan with a SmartEC controller offers better efficiency, precise 0-10V or PWM control, and lower noise.
However, it means replacing the fan, changing the wiring harness and paying more per unit. Against a request this simple, that is over-engineering. In short, it answers a question nobody asked.
A standard IP54-rated DC controller also exists. Unfortunately it does not work with an AC fan on mains voltage.
The part that fits
So the LWSC-AC-001 was the right answer. It is a phase-angle device, essentially a dimmer, which varies the voltage reaching the motor.
It runs from 220 to 240VAC at 50Hz and handles 5 to 200W on resistive-capacitive loads. Electrically, that is what a single-phase induction motor looks like. Consequently it suits the motor inside most AC axial fans.
The trade-off, stated plainly
Phase-angle control is not elegant. It chops the voltage waveform, which raises motor noise and wastes energy beside an EC system.
What it buys instead is very low cost, no integration work and instant availability. For a customer adding a knob to an existing product, those three outweigh efficiency easily.
Finally the project ran as light development. It produced an approved spec sheet and a quotation, which the customer confirmed.
Technical Specifications
The table lists several load types. For an AC fan speed controller the RC row is the one that matters, since that is what a single-phase induction motor looks like electrically.

| Model Number | LWSC-AC-001 |
| Voltage | 220-240VAC |
| Frequency | 50Hz |
| Load Type: Dimmable LED lamp (PF>0.9) | 5…200W |
| Load Type: Dimmable LED lamp (PF=0.5-0.6) | 5…100W |
| Load Type: High-pressure halogen / Incandescent lamp | 5…200W |

Meanwhile the following documents were approved and delivered to the customer to support integration and final confirmation.

Why a small part still deserves an answer
The engineering here was simple. Even so, four things made the difference.
- An answer in days. A simple request moved from enquiry to confirmation with minimal delay, because we could select a qualified off-the-shelf part from our accessory line rather than start a development cycle.
- Cost that suits a small component. On a basic AC fan speed controller, price is most of the decision. Our manufacturing base puts it materially below European-sourced equivalents.
- One supplier for fan and control. Buying the fan and the AC fan speed controller together removes a vendor from the supply chain, and it means the two parts have been tested together rather than assumed compatible.
- A route to EC when it is needed. This customer chose the basic answer, which is right today. Later, when efficiency rules tighten, the same supplier moves them onto a SmartEC platform with no new relationship to build.

Questions before you fit one
Will this controller work with any AC fan?
No. This AC fan speed controller is a phase-angle device suited to single-phase induction motors, meaning shaded-pole or permanent split capacitor types. It will not work with three-phase motors or with any EC motor. Check your fan power falls inside the 5 to 200W range before ordering.
How does it differ from a VFD or an EC controller?
Above, the one chops the AC voltage waveform, which is simple but noisier and less efficient. A VFD instead varies the supply frequency, which is considerably more efficient. An EC controller sends a low-voltage signal such as 0-10V to a motor with its own electronics, and that is the most efficient, quietest and most precise of the three.
Does it need its own power supply?
No. It is a two-wire device wired in series with the live line feeding the fan, and it draws power from the same 220 to 240VAC mains it controls. Consequently there is no separate low-voltage DC supply to install, which EC fan controllers usually require.
Will phase-angle control make the fan hum?
Often, yes, especially at low speed. Chopping the waveform excites the motor laminations, which makes a buzz that changes with the setting. If the product goes somewhere quiet, that alone is a reason to consider an EC fan, whatever the price gap suggests.
