UL 507 changed in 2026. Use this buyer checklist to define high ambient and unattended fan requirements and verify component evidence before design in.

On August 14, 2026, a new revision to the tenth edition of UL 507 was published. For buyers of fans used in HVAC/R equipment, control cabinets, communications hardware, automation equipment, and industrial ventilation systems, the practical issue is not the certification mark alone. Three questions now deserve an explicit answer: What is the real maximum ambient temperature at the fan? Will the equipment operate or restart while unattended? Does the supplier’s evidence cover a component fan, or the finished appliance?

If these questions are left vague during sourcing, they tend to return during temperature testing, certification review, or preproduction validation. At that point, changing a fan may also force changes to the power supply, controls, enclosure, or fault response of the finished equipment.

What changed in the 2026 revision

The public ANSI revision summary identifies three subjects that directly affect fan sourcing:

  • clarification of temperature correction in the temperature test for fans rated above 25°C ambient;
  • requirements concerning fans for use in unattended areas;
  • alignment of multiple requirements with UL 1004-3.

UL 507 covers component fans and low voltage component fans among other products. Being within the standard’s scope, however, does not mean that a particular model has already been evaluated to the August 2026 revision. It also does not mean that a component fan makes the finished appliance automatically compliant.

A useful evidence package should identify the standard edition, exact model coverage, rated ambient conditions, installation limits, and the evaluations that remain the responsibility of the end product.

High ambient must be a measurable requirement

A request for a high temperature fan is incomplete unless it defines temperature, duration, and installation conditions. The same fan can experience very different winding, controller, and bearing temperatures on an open test bench, inside a compact control cabinet, or next to a heat exchanger.

A useful RFQ should state:

  • normal and maximum ambient temperature;
  • whether the maximum is continuous or a short peak;
  • inlet air temperature versus the temperature around the motor and electronics;
  • continuous, intermittent, or thermostat controlled duty;
  • expected system resistance, filter loading, and available installation space;
  • input voltage and permitted variation;
  • required standard and edition.

Buyers should request model specific evidence covering the temperature test conditions, relevant component limits, protective devices, and controlled report scope. Motor insulation class or a material temperature rating alone does not establish that the complete fan assembly is suitable for the intended installation.

Unattended operation changes the abnormal condition review

Unattended means more than twenty four hour operation. A fan may start, stop, stall, reset, or continue running when nobody is present to intervene.

The sourcing and end product review should address:

  • locked rotor and restricted airflow behavior;
  • restart after power recovery;
  • repeated cycling of an automatically reset protector;
  • winding, controller, and lead wire temperatures during abnormal operation;
  • protection against access to live and moving parts;
  • how the finished equipment detects or responds to fan failure;
  • whether dust, condensation, oil mist, or corrosive exposure is outside the report scope.

A normal airflow curve and sound value answer whether the fan can meet the operating point. They do not explain what happens when the airflow path is blocked or the rotor cannot turn.

What Longwell controlled Intertek documentation shows

Longwell maintains an Intertek Authorization to Mark and controlled certification report under control number 5022563, issued September 14, 2023. The file addresses defined families of indoor use DC component fans at 12V, 24V, and 48V. The evaluation record includes input, temperature, dielectric withstand, humidity, component breakdown, locked rotor temperature and endurance, impact, and mold stress relief testing.

The boundaries are as important as the test list:

  • the documentation concerns component fans, not automatic certification of every finished product;
  • the evaluated application is indoor use;
  • hazardous location use was not evaluated;
  • the end product must still address enclosure, power input, normal and abnormal temperatures, electric shock protection, moving parts, and lead wires;
  • the controlled file cites the UL 507 edition and revision status applicable when it was issued, so it should not be presented as proof that every covered model has already been evaluated to the August 2026 revision.

The right question is therefore not simply, Is the fan ETL certified? A better request identifies the exact model, current authorization scope, applicable standard edition, and intended installation. Longwell’s public document entry point is available on its Certifications and Declarations page.

Provide the following in one message:

End application and destination market; input voltage; required airflow and static pressure; normal and maximum ambient temperature; continuous or intermittent duty; unattended operation and automatic restart conditions; mounting orientation and available space; acoustic target; dust, condensation, or corrosive exposure; required standard and edition; component recognition or finished product certification requirement; sample quantity, annual volume, and project schedule.

A complete application brief allows the supplier to reject unsuitable models before tooling, certification testing, or enclosure changes become expensive. For different sizes or winding configurations within one series, use the controlled documentation for the final orderable model rather than evidence for a nearby model.

Four checks before design in

Freeze the application boundary

Confirm the operating point, maximum ambient, duty, installation space, and abnormal scenarios. Without these inputs, any model recommendation remains provisional.

Lock the complete model number

Compare the sample label, drawing, data sheet, quotation, and certification documentation character by character. A suffix may identify voltage, speed, protection, or construction differences.

Compare the report with the latest revision

Ask the supplier to identify the standard edition cited by the current report and provide a gap review against the 2026 revision. If supplementary evaluation is required, agree on ownership and timing before design freeze.

Preserve the end product safety functions

Even when a recognized component fan is used, the final equipment may still need power protection, access protection, temperature controls, and a defined response to fan failure.

Frequently asked questions

Does an existing UL 507 or ETL file automatically cover the 2026 revision

No such conclusion should be made without a model specific review. The supplier and certification body need to compare the controlled report, its current authorization, and the revised requirements.

Does a recognized component fan eliminate finished equipment testing

No. The finished product may still need evaluation of its enclosure, power supply, temperature limits, access protection, controls, and actual abnormal operating conditions.

Is motor insulation class enough to establish a high ambient rating

No. The review may also involve winding temperature rise, electronics, bearings, polymeric materials, lead wires, mounting space, and actual airflow.

What if the exact fan model has not been selected

Send the application limits and operating point first. After candidate models are identified, request the controlled evidence applicable to each exact model.

Can this checklist replace a certification body’s decision

No. It helps buyers, engineers, and suppliers prepare complete inputs and evidence early. The final compliance decision depends on the applicable standard, certification body, and finished product evaluation.
