What the HVAC OEM needed

A high-volume HVAC OEM needed an EC centrifugal blower. It was going into a new series of commercial ventilation units.

They had already tested the model, and asked us to finalize the specification sheet. In practice that means one thing. They were moving the part into mass production.

The box it had to fit in

  • First, the assembly could not exceed 662 by 365 by 401 mm.
  • Second, it had to run on 110-240V, since the finished units ship worldwide.
  • Noise had to stay at or below 41 dB(A) at the duty point.
  • Finally, input power was capped at 253 W, in line with their ASHRAE 90.1 goals.

The duty point itself was 1236 m3/h at 371 Pa. Furthermore, they wanted demand-controlled ventilation. So simple speed control over 0-10V or Modbus was essential.

Confirming the EC centrifugal blower choice

This was documentation rather than new product work. The EC centrifugal blower was already chosen. Even so, our job was to check the application against it before signing anything off.

In short, the unit is a direct-drive, single-inlet, forward-curved wheel with an integrated EC motor.

AC with a VFD was considered

A standard AC motor with a variable frequency drive would have worked. However, the SmartEC motor wins on three counts at once.

Firstly, it takes less space. It removes the cost of sourcing a separate drive. Moreover its native 0-10V and PWM inputs simplify the control wiring. Consequently there was no case for the AC route.

The impeller decision is the interesting one

We also looked at a backward-curved impeller, which has higher peak static efficiency. On paper it is the better wheel.

Nevertheless it lost. Reaching 1236 m3/h with backward-curved blades needs a bigger wheel and a bigger casing. That breaks the 662mm length limit outright.

So the forward-curved EC centrifugal blower won on the constraint that mattered. That is normal in OEM work. Efficiency is one variable among several, and the fixed dimension usually decides.

Reaching 41 dB(A) without extra parts

Here the galvanized steel scroll housing is matched to the impeller, which raises static pressure regain. In short, that match delivered the noise target with no acoustic treatment, no insulation and no added cost.

Why the OEM standardized on it

Standardizing an EC centrifugal blower for mass production is a bigger step than buying one. Four things supported it here.

  • Performance parity, lower cost. imported European brands sell comparable EC blowers. This one meets the same 1236 m3/h and 371 Pa at a materially lower unit cost, which is how the OEM hit an aggressive cost-down target without losing efficiency or quiet.
  • Controls are already inside. The built-in SmartEC controller handles 0-10V, PWM and RS485 Modbus. Consequently the customer never had to source, integrate or test a separate VFD, which cuts both supply chain complexity and installed cost.
  • The figures are measured. We supply full test reports to AMCA 210/211 and ISO 5801 methods. That confidence carries into their own equipment approval, rather than stopping at our datasheet.
  • Documents that fit their systems. The request was to formalize a spec for an existing design. It came back as final, checkable documents, ready for their PLM and buying systems. No re-engineering sat in between.

Questions about this blower

What control interfaces does it accept?

The integrated SmartEC controller takes 0-10V for variable speed, PWM for digital control, and RS485 for Modbus RTU. Consequently it integrates directly with most building systems, with no proprietary gateway. The default setting is normally 0-10V.

Will it run on 60Hz in North America?

Yes. The EC motor and its power electronics accept a universal 110-240V input and are frequency independent, so 50Hz and 60Hz both give identical performance with nothing to adjust. That makes inventory simpler for an OEM selling across regions.

What is the lead time and minimum order?

Standard make-to-order lead time runs 15 to 25 days. Production minimums sit between 100 and 500 units. For smaller quantities or faster delivery, check stock with our sales team, since we hold common models in Ningbo.

When would backward-curved be the better choice?

Whenever you have the space and the system pressure is high. A backward-curved wheel is more efficient, and it does not overload when resistance drops. So if the cabinet allows a larger diameter, it is usually the better answer. Here it simply did not fit.
