What the condenser OEM needed

An HVAC manufacturer building air-cooled condensers for North America came to us already knowing which 630mm AC axial fan it wanted. The request was for a standard specification sheet rather than a design brief. In other words, the engineering had largely been done.

The duty point was 11,330 m3/h, or 6,665 CFM, on a 220 VAC, 60 Hz supply. That is the airflow needed to reject heat at peak load. Consequently it is not negotiable in a condenser.

Here the rest of the brief was equally firm.

  • A 630mm impeller, with the whole 630mm AC axial fan no deeper than 185mm.
  • An L10 life of at least 30,000 hours on continuous S1 duty.
  • Reliable running anywhere between -30C and +60C.
  • Noise no higher than 75 dB(A) at the duty point, set by local environmental rules.
  • IP44 protection, plus CE marking so the finished condenser can be sold into European markets.

Asking for a standard datasheet rather than an NPI brief is a deliberate signal. Basically, the customer wanted a proven part. It also wanted to launch quickly, with as little development risk as possible.

Checking the 630mm AC axial fan against the brief

The project manager began by checking the model the customer had already picked, the LWAA4E630S-5MEB-28, against every line of the brief.

Does it actually fit

At 630mm diameter and 184mm total depth, it sits inside the OEM envelope with a millimetre to spare. Furthermore, tested to ISO 5801 in our own lab, it delivers 11,330 m3/h and roughly 160 Pa of peak static pressure. That covers the cooling requirement.

Why we did not push the EC version

We considered an EC fan, and it would certainly have been an easy upsell. Higher efficiency, plus proper speed control through our SmartEC platform. Even so, we rejected it.

Meanwhile the reason is the customer control panel. It is built around simple on/off switching of AC components. Dropping in an EC fan therefore means redesigning that panel and rewriting the software. That costs far more than the energy saved on a product with this duty profile. Staying with the 220V, 60Hz motor kept integration simple and hit the cost target.

What is inside the fan

The motor is a continuous duty S1, Class F insulated external rotor type. External rotor construction keeps the assembly short. That is exactly why this 630mm AC axial fan fits inside 185mm at all. It also puts the windings where the airstream can cool them.

  • A five-blade stamped and welded steel impeller, chosen for durability where the airstream carries dust.
  • IP44 protection across the assembly.
  • An automatic-reset thermal overload protector that opens between 150 and 160C, so a blocked fan does not burn out.
  • Maintenance-free deep groove ball bearings, rated across the full -30C to +60C range and good for the 30,000-hour L10 target.

Here the conclusion was straightforward. The standard part fitted, so no customization was needed. None was invented either.

Why the OEM bought from us

In the end, four things made this an easy supplier decision.

  • Documents in under 48 hours. The customer needed approved paperwork rather than a development program. We sent it within two days, and bulk orders for a standard 630mm AC axial fan ship in 15 to 25 days.
  • Cost without a compromise. This fan matches top-tier European brands on performance and reliability, yet the price point is materially lower. Vertical integration in Ningbo is how that gap exists, rather than thinner engineering.
  • Curves that hold up in a model. Every fan is tested in our lab to AMCA 210/211 and ISO 5801 methods, with results independently verified. So the published 11,330 m3/h and the P-Q curve can be used directly in system modeling.
  • CE as standard. The fan already carries it, which shortens the OEM’s own compliance work on the finished condenser and removes a round of testing cost.

Questions this specification raised

What bearings does it use, and what life should I expect?

Maintenance-free deep groove ball bearings, rated for 30,000 hours L10 at a 40C ambient. Importantly, they were chosen to hold that rating across the full -30C to +60C window rather than only at room temperature.

Can the speed be controlled?

Not natively. A 630mm AC axial fan of this type uses an induction motor, so its 1500 RPM follows the 60 Hz supply. An external VFD will vary it. However, if you want 0-10V or PWM control built in, take the SmartEC version of the same 630mm platform instead of adding a drive.

What are the lead times for samples and production?

Samples leave Ningbo in 5 to 7 working days, since this is a standard production item. A make-to-order run of 100 to 500 units takes 15 to 25 days. Many European suppliers quote 8 to 12 weeks for comparable parts.

Why does an external rotor motor suit a condenser?

Meanwhile the rotor sits outside the stator and carries the blades directly, so the whole assembly is short. That matters when the envelope is 185mm deep. Moreover, the moving surface sits in the airstream, which helps the motor shed its own heat on a hot day.

Working on something similar?

Send us the duty point, the envelope and the supply, and our engineers come back with a shortlist rather than a catalog. Meanwhile custom spec sheets and samples run to 90 days. Since 1990 we have built fans for HVAC, cold chain, data center and industrial OEMs.
