When one stops, though, the motor is not always the fault. Several cheaper things fail first.

Working safely on 12V
Low voltage is not the same as no risk, particularly with a battery capable of very high current.
Disconnect the battery or pull the fuse before working. A shorted 12V circuit can melt cable and start a fire long before anything else notices. Meanwhile take care with the roof aperture, since a dropped tool goes straight through to the interior.
On most designs the motor is reached from inside, so the roof flange and its sealant stay untouched. Avoid removing the exterior lid or flange unless the design genuinely requires it.
Fitting the new motor
- Photograph the wiring and blade position before removal.
- Note which way the blade faces, since reversed blades move little air.
- Transfer the blade carefully, avoiding any bending.
- Set blade clearance so it cannot touch the housing or the lid.
- Use proper crimped connectors rather than twisted joints.
- Finally, secure the cable so vibration cannot chafe it.
Blade position matters more than people expect. Too high and it catches the lid; too low and airflow drops noticeably.
Testing before you travel
Test properly on the drive rather than discovering a problem on a hot afternoon.

When to replace the whole unit
Sometimes a motor swap is not the sensible answer.
If the lid mechanism is broken, the housing is cracked, or the unit is an old non-powered vent, a complete replacement usually costs little more and delivers far more. Meanwhile modern units add reversibility, variable speed, rain sensing and much lower current draw.
