Furnace Blower Won’t Turn Off — Fix

A furnace blower that will not stop is rarely broken. Something is telling it to run, and the job is finding out what.

Four causes cover almost every case, and the first one costs nothing to check.

Short answer
Check the thermostat fan setting first, since ON runs the blower continuously by design. Then check whether the furnace is overheating and holding the fan on through its limit switch. After that, suspect a stuck control board relay or a wiring fault. Restricted airflow causes the second case more often than anything else.

Cause 1: the thermostat is set to ON

This accounts for a large share of calls, and it takes ten seconds to rule out.

Most thermostats offer AUTO and ON. In ON, the blower runs continuously regardless of heating or cooling demand. Meanwhile some smart thermostats have a circulation setting that does the same thing on a schedule.

Switch to AUTO and wait a few minutes. If the blower stops, that was the whole problem.

Cause 2: the limit switch is holding it on

A furnace limit switch opens when the heat exchanger gets too hot, and it shuts off the burner while keeping the blower running to cool it.

  • A dirty filter is the usual trigger, since it starves airflow.
  • Then a blocked return grille does exactly the same thing.
  • Closed supply registers cut airflow through the exchanger too.
  • A dirty blower wheel cuts airflow without any obvious sign.
  • A failing blower motor running slowly has the same effect.
  • Finally, an oversized furnace can overheat even with clean airflow.

Cause 3: a stuck relay or control fault

The control board switches the blower through a relay, and relays weld shut.

If the blower runs continuously with the thermostat in AUTO and the furnace cool, a stuck relay is the likely cause. Meanwhile a short in the thermostat wiring, particularly between the fan and common terminals, produces exactly the same symptom.

A quick isolation test
Disconnect the fan wire at the thermostat. If the blower still runs, the fault is at the board or in the wiring rather than at the thermostat. This work involves live circuits, so leave it to a qualified technician.

Cause 4: a failed fan control or timer

Older furnaces used a mechanical fan and limit control with a temperature-sensing element in the plenum.

When that element fails or the contacts stick, the blower runs on indefinitely. Modern boards use a timed off delay instead, and a board fault can leave that delay running permanently.

Either way the symptom is the same, and the fix is a component replacement rather than an adjustment.

Working through it in order

  1. Set the thermostat fan to AUTO and wait several minutes.
  2. Check and change the air filter.
  3. Confirm return and supply grilles are unobstructed.
  4. Feel whether the furnace is hot, which points at the limit switch.
  5. Check for a fault code on the control board.
  6. Finally, have a technician test the relay and thermostat wiring.

Is continuous running harmful?

A furnace blower running all the time is not dangerous, although it is not free either.

It uses electricity continuously, wears bearings faster and loads the filter more quickly. Meanwhile if the cause is a limit switch responding to overheating, the underlying condition genuinely does need attention.

Blower running FAQ

Is it bad to run the furnace blower continuously?

Not harmful, though it uses energy and loads filters faster. Some people run it deliberately for even temperatures, which is a legitimate choice on a variable speed motor.

Why does the blower run after the heat stops?

That is normal behaviour, since the fan clears residual heat from the exchanger. A delay of one to three minutes is expected; several minutes every cycle suggests restricted airflow.

Can a dirty filter cause this?

Yes, very commonly. Restricted airflow overheats the exchanger, the limit switch opens, and the blower keeps running to cool it down.

Should I just switch the furnace off?

Only as a temporary measure while awaiting service. If a limit switch is involved, switching off removes the cooling the appliance was providing itself.

A furnace blower that will not stop is usually obeying an instruction. Check the thermostat, then the filter, then the limit switch, and only then the board.
