LWA-385×115-5 Axial Fan Impeller for Commercial HVAC OEM

Table of Contents

Customer Requirement

An axial fan impeller with a diameter of 385 mm, a blade height of 115 mm, and a bore diameter of 8 mm is required. The client is an OEM seeking commercial HVAC condenser unit accessories.

The OEM provided a reference picture and expressed the need for customization based on requirements and drawings. This blade size is constrained by its system airflow channel and the motor shaft specification, among which the Ø 8mm bore diameter is an unalterable hard matching condition. The performance targets were further confirmed as a ventilation capacity of 2,000–3,500 m³/h and a static pressure of 50–100 Pa. At the same time, this product needs to meet the requirements of CE and potential UL certification, and must comply with the GB/T 14486-93 specification.

Engineering Solution

The request is a typical customized impeller engineering development project under fixed system conditions. This project is classified as a custom New Product Introduction (NPI) focused on tooling and manufacturing a new impeller, designated LWA- Ø385×115-5. The first step was to translate the customer’s dimensional needs into a full 3D model and production-ready 2D drawing.

The OEM did not specify a material. Their reference image noted several plastics. The selection of material for an outdoor condenser application is crucial. We evaluated three options: standard polypropylene (PP), glass-reinforced ABS, and glass-reinforced AS (Acrylonitrile Styrene). We recommended reinforced AS for its superior UV resistance and dimensional stability across a wide temperature range, a key factor for equipment installed outdoors. The blade’s aerodynamic design incorporated LONGWELL’s AcousticFlow™ principles. The curvature and pitch of the five blades were optimized in computational fluid dynamics simulations to minimize tip vortex noise at the target RPM range.

These specifications define an impeller engineered for OEM. When paired with an appropriate external rotor EC motor, the LWA-Ø385×115-5 is capable of delivering airflow in the 2,000 to 3,500 m³/h range required for compact commercial condenser units.

Why Longwell for This Application

OEMs requiring custom air-moving components choose Longwell for reasons that go beyond the part itself. This project highlights LONGWELL advantages:

  • Rapid Custom Tooling: The customer requested a non-standard Ø385 mm impeller. LONGWELL’s 90-day NPI process can help customers accelerate the time to integrate products and enter the market. The whole process is faster than the 12-18 month cycles needed among European Suppliers.
  • Cost Structure: The OEM client optimized their cost structure by customizing only the impeller from LONGWELL. This allows them to maintain flexibility over purchasing motors and final assembly, achieving a relatively lower cost.
  • Materials and Supply Chain: LONGWELL owns a diversified supply chain and integration advantages. We suggested that the OEM client select reinforced AS material for its comprehensive performance advantages.
  • Integrated Performance Validation: During this project, LONGWELL provides the LWA-Ø385×115-5 impeller along with the usage test data of common motors. We own labs that are validated to AMCA 210-16 and ISO 5801 standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the typical lead time to develop a custom impeller like the LWA-Ø385×115-5?

A: Our standard NPI cycle for a custom impeller is 90 days from specification lock to first order shipment. This is a key advantage over the 12+ month timelines from European competitors.

Q: We only need the fan blade. What performance data can Longwell provide for an impeller-only project?

A: We provide complete aerodynamic and acoustic performance data. The output is a full test report with a pressure-quantity curve, power, and efficiency curves. For a new design project, the design verification usually needs 3-6 weeks. The test results will be sent to the customer in 2-4 weeks after the sample.

Q: Can the LWA-Ø385×115-5 impeller be produced in ATEX-rated or other specialized materials?

A: Yes. While glass-reinforced AS is used for this HVAC application, we can manufacture impellers from a variety of materials. This includes ATEX-compliant anti-static/conductive plastics or materials with high chemical resistance like PP.
