HVAC Ventilation Limits for a 125mm Circular Duct Fan

Engineers specifying a 125mm circular duct fan face a

125mm circular duct fan face strict limits in tight HVAC spaces. First, the customer brought us a clear and hard problem. Next, the brief listed several hard electrical and physical targets. The 125mm circular duct fan had to run on a standard 230V single-phase supply. Furthermore, they asked for a heavy galvanized steel fan shell. They also demanded a strong and balanced metal fan wheel. This showed that long physical life was a big goal for their project.

However, the hardest project limits involved tight space and cold weather. The system needed 300 to 400 m3/h of air volume. Therefore, pushing this much air through a small pipe creates fast air speeds. Next, the fan had to survive extreme cold winter weather. The ambient temperature range dropped down to a freezing -25°C. By contrast, normal plastic blades snap and break in freezing air. So, heavy metal parts were truly needed for this cold job. Finally, the brief asked for a fully sealed IP55 water rating. Safety limits meant the 125mm circular duct fan must pass EN 60335-1 safety rules. Therefore, we tested to ISO 5801 methods to check the real air flow capacity.

Engineering Choices for the HVAC System

Giving a customer exactly what they ask for can cause system problems. Instead, we changed a few things to make the fan work better over its life.

Balancing High Air Volume Against HVAC Noise

A small 125 mm pipe creates fast wind when you push 400 m3/h through it. First, we tested a fast motor to hit that high air target. However, the fast air made loud and bad noise. This noise easily passed normal HVAC acoustic limits. So, we picked a highly balanced motor spinning at 2350 RPM. This choice dropped the peak air to 294 m3/h. The lower air volume missed their 300 m3/h floor by a tiny amount. Even so, this small drop capped the noise at a quiet 60 dB(A). Furthermore, this choice cut the input power down to only 52W. By contrast, a stronger motor would waste too much daily energy. Finally, the unit still hits a high static pressure of 326 Pa. Therefore, the air easily reaches the end of the long duct.

Dropping the IP Rating to Save the Motor

The customer asked for a fully sealed IP55 rating. However, tight IP55 motors trap heat inside the metal shell. This trapped heat hurts the motor bearings during S1 continuous duty running. Instead, we gave the 125mm circular duct fan an IP44 rating. First, the fan sits deep inside a round pipe network. The metal pipes already block direct heavy water jets. Therefore, IP44 is enough to stop solid parts over 1 mm and splashing water. Next, this change brought a materially lower cost for the buyer. Furthermore, letting the motor breathe helps it survive hot air up to 60°C. Finally, we kept the metal blade demand to stop winter freezing breaks. This ensures the unit passes JB/T 10563 rules safely.

Choosing the Casing and Impeller Material

Metal parts cost more than standard plastic ones. Even so, the cold weather made metal the only safe choice. First, the air drops to -25°C in the winter. At this extreme cold, normal plastic blades get hard and crack. Therefore, we used a heavy steel impeller. Next, we matched this with a thick galvanized steel casing. This metal shell protects the external rotor motor from outside harm. Furthermore, we balanced the whole wheel to G6.3 grades. This high balance grade stops shaking and bad vibrations. As a result, the fan lasts longer and stays very quiet.

The S1 continuous duty cycle and Class F insulation rows matter most here. First, S1 means the fan can run all day without stopping. Furthermore, Class F insulation protects the wire loops inside the motor block. Therefore, the motor easily survives the high 60°C air limit.
