How a Biofilter Uses a Fan to Collect and Treat Odor

Covering an odor source helps only if the released air follows a controlled route. An extraction fan draws air from the enclosure toward a biofilter.

The duct delivers air to the filter bed

In this arrangement, the fan feeds a distribution space beneath the bed. Air rises through the open spaces in the media. The collection duct, humidification section and bed all add resistance.

The moist surface is the transfer point

Odorous compounds move from the air into moisture on the media surface. Microorganisms in the biofilm then break down suitable compounds. The fan transports air; the biology performs the treatment.

Keep both air contact and moisture

The media needs the specified moisture and contact conditions. A dry area or an easy channel through the bed can reduce useful treatment. Simply increasing the fan speed does not repair the biological process.

Verify collection and treatment together

Check the enclosure capture, flow distribution and condition of the media. The required airflow must be evaluated with the actual duct and bed resistance, including changes during operation.
