Why Stored Potatoes Need Air Through the Pile

Stored potatoes remain alive: they respire, release heat and moisture, and change the atmosphere within a pile. This video explains how through-pile airflow, controlled outdoor-air exchange and humidity management support a bulk potato store.

Account for a living crop

Tubers consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide, moisture and respiratory heat. Heat can accumulate in the interior of the pile.

Distribute air through the pile

A supply fan and under-pile distribution route move conditioned air through the spaces between tubers. Uniform distribution matters as well as total fan volume.

Control fresh air and return air

Mix outdoor air with return air to regulate the supply conditions. Controlled freshening removes accumulated carbon dioxide while admitting replacement air.

Balance cooling and moisture loss

Temperature, relative humidity and airflow affect the balance between removing heat and drying the crop. Crop variety, condition and storage phase determine the operating plan.

  • A poorly reached pile region retains heat.
