Why Mushroom Rooms Need Controlled Fresh Air and Circulation

Growing mushrooms and their substrate release heat, carbon dioxide and moisture. A room fan can distribute the air, but keeping the crop environment suitable also requires controlled air replacement.

Circulation distributes the conditioned air

Return air passes through the conditioning section and moves back along the growing beds. This circulation reduces stagnant regions, but returning the same air does not remove the carbon dioxide added by the crop.

Fresh air needs a controlled exit too

The fresh-air branch changes the room’s gas balance. A corresponding exhaust path lets used air leave. Fresh-air and recirculation settings therefore serve related but different purposes.

Protect the moisture balance at the crop

Moving dry air across the growing surface encourages evaporation. Too much local drying can affect the crop, so air distribution must be considered together with humidity and the moisture held in the substrate.

The growth stage changes the requirement

Spawn growth, pinning and cropping do not share one universal air programme. The grower sets the temperature, humidity and carbon-dioxide strategy for the species, stage and production method.
