A cross-flow fan can spread airflow across a wide, shallow opening above or beside a passenger cabin. Its job is air exchange through the openings defined by the elevator design; it does not create cooling without a separate refrigeration system.

Cabin opening
Air reaches the fan through the intake provided by the car and ceiling design.
Cross-flow wheel
The long impeller draws air across its width and feeds a shallow discharge passage.
Distribution
The plenum and grille spread the flow into or out of the cabin.
Return path
A separate opening completes the exchange route; the fan cannot work against a sealed cabin.
What the fan is responsible for
- Move the required cabin air through the available openings and guards.
- Fit a broad, shallow packaging envelope where a conventional round fan may not fit.
- Operate within the elevator controller, sound and maintenance requirements.
Why the route matters
- A restricted ceiling grille can consume much of the available pressure.
- An undefined return opening can short-circuit or choke the intended exchange.
- Mounting vibration or tonal noise can become obvious in a small occupied cabin.
