Consumer Air Coolers, Tower Fans and Handheld Fans · ODM Programmes for European Retail
Compiled from LONGWELL’s real correspondence with European household-appliance brands and retail groups. This segment buys finished machines, not fans — and it is decided by things that never appear on a fan datasheet: tooling lead time, instruction-manual wording, GS and CE approval, battery declarations, carton cube per container, and document sets that satisfy three different parties on one shipment.
1 · Challenge
- The manual is a gating item. On a desktop cooler programme, sign-off depended on the instruction manual correctly describing five speed steps, tank capacity and the RGB button-cycle logic — not on airflow.
- Tooling sets the calendar. A dedicated mould runs about 45 days; the whole programme schedules backwards from that, through 3D-printed prototypes and performance evaluation.
- Carton cube is a commercial parameter. At 800 pcs per container and 68 CBM, the ratio of air path to packed volume decides sea-freight cost per unit as much as the bill of materials does.
- Battery status must be declared before booking. Products with cells need transport classification and MSDS/SDS; products without need a written no-battery declaration.
- One shipment, three parties. Brand owner, importer and retail chain each need their own consignee, notify party and Form A on the documents, with order and item numbers cross-referenced.
- Approval is to appliance standards, not fan standards — GS, CE, RoHS, and for motors EN 60335-1 and EN 62233.

3 · Verified figures
Fan performance figures are quoted from LONGWELL controlled datasheets and product nameplates and are tested per AMCA 210/211 methods; third-party reports available on request. EC versus AC energy saving is approximately 30%, higher under strongly varying load — confirm against your own load profile. Final selection must be confirmed against the actual duty point (airflow, static pressure, ambient temperature, certification scope) of your machine.
4 · How these programmes run
5 · Engineering lessons carried forward
- In consumer programmes the instruction manual and the control logic are gating items, not paperwork. Establish a standard manual review step early — speed steps, tank capacity and button behaviour have to match the product exactly before mass production is approved.
- Schedule backwards from tooling. A dedicated mould is roughly 45 days; committing to a retail on-shelf date without that in the plan is how these programmes slip.
- Design for carton cube. On a finished machine the air path and packed volume decide sea-freight cost per unit; evaluating CBM at the design stage is worth as much as trimming the bill of materials.
- Declare battery status before booking, every time. Products with cells need transport classification and MSDS/SDS; products without need a written declaration. Discovering this at the terminal costs the sailing.
- Align consignee, notify party and Form A before despatch when a brand owner, importer and retail chain are all on one shipment. Document mismatch is the most common cause of a hold on this route.
- Reserve contingency in peak season. Rolled containers, demurrage and telex-release changes have to be answered within hours or destination-port charges escalate.
6 · Project evidence
Every item below is a real project thread from LONGWELL’s own correspondence. Each carries an anonymised case reference, the counterparty described by industry and buying role only, an evidence grade, the actual dates from first contact to close, the length of the email thread and, where an invoice is on file, the order value band. Customer names, domains, brand artwork, prices and commercial terms are withheld — including from the photographs. Evidence grade A means controlled documents or test reports are on file for that thread; grade B means a structured enquiry and specification are on file. Order value bands are read from the proforma or commercial invoice held on file for that thread and are rounded to a band; the invoice currency is shown as invoiced. A band is only given where the invoice currency is unambiguous — 20 of the threads on these pages carry one. Unit prices are never published.
