AC to EC Fan Replacement for ErP 2026

Regulation (EU) 2024/1834 applies from 24 July 2026; eligible fans integrated into other products may use the transitional route until 24 July 2027, subject to Annex II. If you are replacing AC fans to keep market access, use two separate checks: verify the applicable BEP-based minimum-efficiency requirement, then confirm performance at the actual duty point.

Updated 2026-09-14 · LONGWELL application engineering

The one thing to take away
ErP minimum-efficiency compliance and application selection are two separate checks. For most fans, the Regulation defines fan efficiency (η) using fan gas power and electrical input power determined at the best efficiency point (BEP), and ηmin uses the electrical input power at BEP. The actual duty point remains essential for airflow, pressure, controls and real-world energy use, but it is not where that minimum-efficiency threshold is established. Jet fans and cross-flow fans follow category-specific rules.

Start here: what actually changed

Plenum plug fan mounted inside an air handling unit
Plenum plug fan in an AHU — a typical ErP 2026 replacement scenario.

(EU) 2024/1834 replaces (EU) No 327/2011. It evaluates the complete fan assembly — impeller, motor, electronics, inlet cone and housing — for fans with electric input power between 125 W and 500 kW, whether sold standalone or built into an AHU, rooftop unit, precision air conditioner or industrial ventilation package.

Three changes matter most to a buyer: higher minimum-efficiency grades, a wider assessed system boundary, and separate partial-load or specified-duty information requirements from 24 July 2027. Product-information, spare-parts and long-term online-information obligations also apply. See the current consolidated EU text and our ErP 2026 requirements guide; use the ErP 2026 efficiency calculator to estimate the applicable BEP-based ηmin threshold, then confirm conformity from traceable technical documentation.

How to use the tables below

1 Find your airflow. Locate the row whose airflow range covers your required volume flow.

2 Check static pressure. Confirm your requirement sits within the band maximum. Maximum airflow and maximum static pressure are two separate extremes — they do not occur at the same operating point and cannot be combined into one duty.

3 Send us the duty point. We return the candidate models sitting closest to their efficient region at that point, with the measured performance data behind them.

A larger, slower impeller can often improve efficiency at the same duty, but size and speed do not establish ErP compliance by themselves. If your existing AC unit runs throttled, the replacement is often one size up and one speed step down — not a like-for-like swap. That is an application-selection decision; the candidate still needs separate BEP-based compliance verification. This is why retrofit projects benefit from a duty-point review rather than a catalogue match.

Four ways replacement projects fail late

Selected on catalogue peak efficiencyBEP values govern the Regulation’s minimum-efficiency check, but they do not by themselves prove good application performance. Confirm airflow, pressure, power and controls at the duty you actually run.
Duty changed, selection not re-checkedA late change in ductwork or filter loading can move the operating point out of the selected fan’s efficient operating region. Re-run the duty-point selection after any system change.
Procurement substitutionA “same size, cheaper” substitute may not meet the same BEP-based minimum-efficiency requirement or deliver the same duty-point performance. Verify both rather than assuming equivalence.
Documentation missingThe efficiency figure must be traceable to a recognised laboratory test method and stated in the technical documentation. Request it early — see certifications & declarations.

Why EC is usually the answer

EC drives can offer strong variable-load performance. From 24 July 2027, Regulation (EU) 2024/1834 requires applicable fans to provide partial-load or specified-duty information, including performance curves at different speeds. This disclosure requirement helps buyers compare operation beyond BEP; it is distinct from the BEP-based minimum-efficiency requirement.

In our own European retrofit work, EC replacements have delivered energy savings of around 30% against the AC units they replaced, with higher savings on strongly variable loads — the actual figure must be confirmed against the load profile of the specific installation. Worked examples in our engineering cases.

Data notes and disclaimer

Airflow and static pressure figures are catalogue extremes taken from separate operating points and cannot be combined into a single duty. Input power is derived from rated voltage and current and indicates regulatory scope only. Performance data is obtained using recognised laboratory test methods; third-party reports available on request.

This page explains the regulation and our product coverage — it is not a declaration of conformity for any specific model or project. Confirm regulatory conformity using the applicable category-specific method and traceable technical documentation; separately confirm application selection against the duty point (airflow / static pressure / voltage / control method) and project verification.
