How Fluid-Bed Fans Lift, Mix and Dry Granules

A fluid bed uses upward air to support and mix granules above a distributor. Useful operation needs a material-specific airflow range: insufficient air leaves a settled bed, while excessive velocity can increase fine-particle carryover.

01 / Application principle

Follow the airflow through the equipment

01

Pressurize the lower plenum

The supply fan moves air through the treatment path into the space below the bed.

02

Distribute through the plate

The perforated distributor spreads the supply. The fan must overcome both distribution and bed resistance.

03

Lift and mix the granules

Sufficient upward gas force supports the particles. Their repeated contact with air promotes heat and moisture transfer.

04

Manage the outlet stream

Drying air carries evaporated moisture away; a cooling section removes heat. The exhaust collection system manages any entrained fines.

02 / Airflow function

What the fan contributes

  • Supplies the pressure needed by the air-treatment path, plate and bed.
  • Provides a controllable flow range as loading and bed conditions change.
  • Supports consistent distribution and the required gas-solid contact.
Air-path check

What interrupts the intended process

  • Low airflow leaves weakly mixed or settled regions.
  • Uneven distribution creates poorly treated areas.
  • Excessive velocity carries fine particles toward exhaust collection.

Match the fan to this air path

LONGWELL industrial centrifugal families are candidates for the clean-air supply side. Define the range of required operating points instead of one nominal airflow. Granule handling, hazardous-area classification or food/pharma qualification cannot be inferred from the family image.

Where it sits

On the clean-air supply side feeding the plenum below the distributor plate.

Why consider this configuration

A pressure-capable centrifugal family can be compared across changing bed/distributor resistance, with material-specific testing.
