Voltage, Frequency & Certification Checker — Which Fan Spec for Which Country?

Buying fans for another market raises three questions at once: what voltage and frequency, which marks are mandatory, and will the fan I already have work. Pick the destination, optionally enter the nameplate of the fan you are considering, and get the answer with the physics explained — e.g. why a 230 V / 50 Hz AC fan draws 70 % more power in Saudi Arabia or the Philippines.

What changes with 50 vs 60 Hz — and why EC fans don't care

AC induction motor speed n = 120 × f ÷ poles × (1 − slip) → 60 Hz = +20 % rpm vs 50 Hz
Fan laws at +20 % speed airflow ×1.20 · pressure ×1.44 · power ×1.73
Motor flux ∝ V ÷ f → 230 V/50 Hz motor on 230 V/60 Hz: flux −17 % (less torque, usually OK); 60 Hz motor on 50 Hz: flux +20 % (saturation, overheating)
EC / DC electronic commutation — speed set by the controller, independent of mains frequency; input 200–277 V or 380–480 V, 50/60 Hz

Practical rule: for one SKU across 50 and 60 Hz markets choose an EC fan (or a DC fan on the equipment PSU). For AC fans, order the dual-rated 50/60 Hz winding and check the 60 Hz power curve against the motor rating — the 73 % power increase is the usual surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a 50 Hz fan on 60 Hz?
An AC induction fan will run 20 % faster and draw about 73 % more power, so the motor often overloads unless it was rated for both frequencies. EC and DC fans are unaffected by frequency. Ask for the 50/60 Hz dual-rated winding or an EC version.
Which countries use 230 V at 60 Hz?
Saudi Arabia (most of the grid), the Philippines, South Korea (220 V), Peru and parts of Brazil (220 V / 60 Hz). These need a 60 Hz winding on AC fans — a standard European 230 V / 50 Hz fan is the wrong part.
Do OEM components need UL listing?
Components built into another product normally use UL Recognized (UR) status under UL 507 / UL 1004 rather than a full listing; the finished product is then listed with the component's conditions of acceptability. For Europe the equivalent is a component CE DoC and a CB test report.
Is CE still accepted in the UK?
Yes — the UK government confirmed indefinite recognition of CE marking for most product categories, including electrical equipment and machinery, so UKCA is optional for those goods. Northern Ireland follows EU rules (CE / UKNI).
What is the fastest way to certify a fan for several countries?
Get an IECEE CB test report (IEC 60335-2-80 for fans, IEC 60034 for motors) from the supplier. Most national bodies (KC, SASO, BIS partial, RCM, EAC, INMETRO) accept it with little or no retesting, leaving only factory audits and local labelling.
