Fan datasheets quote a bearing life such as "L10 = 40,000 h at 40 °C" or an MTBF of "1,000,000 h". Neither is the number of hours your fan will run. This tool corrects the rated life for your temperature, speed and duty cycle and turns it into years of service, a replacement interval and a fleet failure rate.

L10 (B10) is the number of running hours at which 10 % of a population of fans is expected to have failed through bearing or grease wear-out, at a stated temperature. It is a lifetime figure. MTBF is the inverse of the random failure rate during the fan's useful life, usually derived from component stress models (MIL-HDBK-217, Telcordia) — it is not a lifetime. A fan with MTBF 1,000,000 h and L10 40,000 h will mostly fail between 30,000 and 80,000 h of bearing wear, while suffering roughly 0.9 % random failures per year before that.

Other life limiters the bearing number does not capture: electrolytic capacitors in EC/DC electronics (also halve per 10 K), dust loading of the impeller (imbalance → bearing load), condensation and corrosion, and start/stop cycling (each start ≈ 1–2 h of wear for grease).
