Always confirm against the manufacturer's maximum speed; the figures above are engineering orientation for preliminary design. Noise, not strength, is usually the practical limit below 60 m/s — every 20 % of tip speed is worth about 5 dB.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate blade pass frequency?
Multiply the number of blades by the rpm and divide by 60. A 7-blade fan at 1,350 rpm has a BPF of 7 × 1,350 ÷ 60 = 157.5 Hz. Harmonics appear at 315, 472 Hz and so on.
Why does my fan have a tonal hum?
A pure tone at the BPF means each blade is hitting the same disturbance once per revolution — an inlet obstruction, a motor strut, a wall too close to the inlet, or a guide vane. Clear the inlet (at least one impeller diameter), use an inlet cone, and choose blade and strut counts with no common factor.
What is a safe tip speed for a plastic fan impeller?
Around 60–80 m/s for glass-filled nylon and 45–60 m/s for unfilled polypropylene, depending on temperature. Aluminium and steel impellers run to 100–130 m/s. Check the maximum rpm in the datasheet — it already includes the material limit.
How does blade count affect noise?
More blades at the same airflow raise the BPF (often into the sensitive 1–4 kHz range) but allow lower rpm and tip speed, which lowers broadband noise. Odd and prime blade counts avoid reinforcing interaction tones with symmetric guards. Forward-curved fans with 30–60 blades push the BPF high, where duct lining absorbs it well.
